I think you summarise all the best ways to get references 😊 I definitely need to try to draw more from life and from old drawings too! Usually I choose the easiest way, and just look for a reference that is ready to start 🙈 also would like to mention an weekly art challenge that I run on Instagram with an artist friend, it's called The Botanica Collective and every week we share a photo (with credits and previous authorization from the author) for artists/creative interpret in their own way 🌿 it's all about botanica, you may like it Katie 🤗

Drawing from reference bridges the gap between observation and memory. To work from memory, you need plenty of images in your memory bank. Working from reference helps to fill it up. Someone in the comments already suggested it, but I would add the work of the masters as great references. The goal isn't to make an exact copy, but to learn why you admire that artist, and think of ways to bring those qualities to your own work.

There is an iOS app called museum where people upload portraits to draw from. You can upload your drawings and see all other drawings from the same reference. I like that a lot

Katie! Thanks so much for all the wonderful ideas. I am going to check out the Morten Hilmer livestream and pull out my vacation photos from Australia to spark some art projects. I know I have some photos from the Victoria Gardens and other great memories to draw from that holiday! I appreciated ALL of your additional suggestions as well. I have enjoyed using mapcrunch but haven't attempted street view on google maps (what a good idea!) I am maybe going to venture out and finally join a patreon too! I am a hobbyist, so I am quite nervous about taking the next step in my painting adventures. I just starting my learning in the last year and a half and I have a long, long way to go! Man, if prisma would up their game a bit they could charge more. Ooooh i got it! They should make a jumbo pencil like cretacolor! That way, it could still be sharpened but the lead wouldnt break nearly as easily ❤

I've only ever used one polychromos that I bought to replace a light green pencil I had in another brand and I'm wondering if I just got a dud because it's sooooo scratchy and I have to press so hard. I typically use prismacolor and derwent drawing though so I'm used to the creamy smushiness of those. I have been wanting to give Holbein and luminance and derwent light-fast a try. I wonder which is the smushiest of those three 😂?

I love the first spread in this sketchbook! Such lovely colours and the landscape is beautiful 😄🩷 Isn't it weird that we can hate a piece while working on it and find so much "wrong" with it. But when you look back at it a little while later, it's much easier to appreciate it and like your work. I feel like that all the time! 😅

I noticed you didn't swatch the Albrecht D pens (am sure you've used them on other videos I'll see at some point)- I was curious about the colour of the green, as the barrel looked quite grey to my eyes 🤦‍♀️ maybe they are all one colour (the barrels). I really loved watching you create. I found this video as I was looking at the Pith sketchbooks and wanted to see some reviews. I do a bit of watercolour, and have found that 300 gsm cotton is the best. I love my Etchr sketchbook, but it is Not, so has some tooth. It's vegan, if that matters, and the quality is great. But definitely a bit pricy. I know you were disappointed with the paper buckling and seep through, but I was amazed at how much you put on. It has definately inspired me. I was looking at Pith from some ink sketching and wash.

I love the childlike whimsy in your art, it really captures the essence of being enamored by this strange yet beautiful world we live in!

Love the use of so many diff materials and techniques, that finger smudge. Nice loose impressionistic quality
